Study: The Difficult Words of Jesus
Join us on Wednesdays starting September 18th at 5:45 for a 6 week study, The Difficult Words of Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine.
Books are optional and cost $14. Please let Paula in the church office know if you want her to order you one, or you can order your own at Amazon.
Study Description
Jesus provided his disciples teachings for how to follow Torah, God’s word; he told them parables to help them discern questions of ethics and of human nature; he offered them beatitudes for comfort and encouragement. But sometimes Jesus spoke words that followers then and now have found difficult. He instructs disciples to hate members of their own families (Luke 14:26), to act as if they were slaves (Matthew 20:27), and to sell their belongings and give to the poor (Luke 18:22). He restricts his mission (Matthew 10:6); he speaks of damnation (Matthew 8:12); he calls Jews the devil’s children (John 8:44).
In The Difficult Words of Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine shows how these difficult teachings would have sounded to the people who first heard them, how have they been understood over time, and how we might interpret them in the context of the Gospel of love and reconciliation.

The Quest | A Worship Series
Whether you travel far away or see your local surroundings as if for the first time, pilgrimage has long been a spiritual practice, and “Journey” a deeply-felt metaphor for our spiritual lives. “Quest” comes from the Latin root meaning “ask, seek.” This four-week worship series will encourage us to open ourselves more fully to the curiosity and wonder, reflection and transformation that travelers–not merely tourists–experience when they choose to immerse themselves in soul-widening adventures.

Study: Radicle Methodism: getting back to our roots
The study starts at 6 PM at Wesley UMC, but everyone is invited to dinner starting at 5 PM. Wesley UMC cook teams will prep the food, and St. Luke members are invited to give a donation to help cover the cost. We are using this registration to let Wesley UMC know how many St. Luke UMC people plan to join.
About the Study:
Welcome to Radicle Methodism. For those of you with green thumbs, you may see the word “radicle” and know that it refers to a foundational part of a plant. The rest of you may think you’ve spotted a typo. In this free online video history course, we talk about root systems and what that has to do with Methodism and, especially, what it means to be United Methodist.
As we journey together through these radicle moments, it is our hope that your are reminded of what it means to be United Methodist, to follow in our founders' footsteps and to be in connection with one another.

Depths of Love: Lenten Worship Series
Join us on Sundays at 10:30 AM starting on February 18th!
The Season of Lent is a time of self-reflection, of spiritual examination. While that is a healthy and necessary exercise, we don’t examine ourselves in isolation. Instead, we are invited to lay our lives alongside the life of Jesus. It is a sobering exercise to say the least. And yet, what we discover in this examination of his life and ours, is not condemnation or recrimination. Instead, we are overwhelmed, the farther we go on this journey with him, by the depths of love he has for all of us. Lent is a time for getting our spiritual house in order, that is true. But above all, it is an invitation to once again commit to love like Christ loves.
Book Club | Feb 15
Book Club w/Rev. Amber Lea |Feb 15| 6 PM | St. Luke Coffee Club
Join Rev. Amber Lea as we read The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning. We will meet together on Feb 15th at 6 PM in the Coffee Club at St. Luke UMC.
About the Book
Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?
Most of us believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.
Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.”
Brennan Manning’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. Now with a Ragamuffin’s thirty-day spiritual journey guide, it will change yours, too.
